We’ve compiled 5 essential tips that can save buyers time, and money, and reduce unnecessary stress along the way. By following these recommendations, you can forge a stronger partnership with your manufacturing supplier and achieve the results you need. Read on to learn how you can set your project up for hassle-free success!

5 Tips to Reduce Stress in the Buying Process

1. Be Proactive in Engaging with Your Manufacturing Partner

We understand that engineering, and designing a part or assembly takes skill, time and meticulous planning. It's important to remember that machining and finishing also require methodical processes and careful scheduling to meet requirements. One common challenge we see is when customers contact us close to their deadlines, hoping for quick turnarounds to meet tight schedules.

The solution? Engage with your manufacturing partner early—ideally during the design and engineering phases. By starting the conversation sooner, we can help you prepare for production, align on timelines, and give you a clearer idea of the expected turnaround times..

2. Consider All Processes in Your Timeline

Many parts require additional processes such as heat treatment, plating, or finishing. We thoroughly vet our vendors, ensuring they are both fast and reliable, however, these extra steps and the transportation back and forth take time. For example, heat treatment can add 2-3 days to lead times, while working with  materials like titanium can extend the timeline by 5-10 days. Plating or coating processes can take anywhere from 1-14 days depending on the complexity.

Understanding these timelines will help to set realistic deadlines and avoid last-minute delays.

3. Understand How Complex Features Impact Lead Times

Certain design features can increase the complexity and time required to machine your parts. Features like small holes, blind holes, hardened materials, and tight internal radii can be challenging, especially when multiple complex features are combined in a single part.

By factoring in these potential machining challenges, you can make informed design decisions that align with your timeline and budget.

4. Be Open to Design for Manufacturing (DfM) Feedback

We’re always happy to provide suggestions when we spot design features or tolerances that could increase production costs. Some customers readily collaborate with us on adjustments, while others may hesitate. However, even minor design tweaks can lead to significant savings in time and cost.

We encourage an open dialogue around Design for Manufacturing (DfM) to ensure your project runs smoothly and that cost and time saving measures are explored.

5. Choose the Right Supplier for Your Project

While sending out mass RFQs to multiple suppliers might seem efficient, it often leads to selecting a manufacturer who isn't the right fit for your project. We've had many customers come back to us after experiencing quality issues with other shops.

We strongly recommend a more targeted approach to ensure you get the results you need. By choosing a shop with the right expertise for your specific job, you reduce the risk of sub-par parts. At Area Tool & Manufacturing, we excel in producing high-quality, precision components. If your project involves larger parts, however, we’ll be honest and recommend a facility better suited to your needs.
